her mom & dad are Sterling Mayes b: February 22, 1819 in Barren Creek, Claiborne Co., Tennessee d: September 20, 1887.
Sarah C. Carr b: October 4, 1821 in Powell Valley, Claiborne Co., Tennessee d: February 9, 1901 in Fort Ridge, Claiborne Co., Tennessee m: 1837 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee.

My  great grandmother  it was found remarried a  J.W.  BOLIN in 1882,d.1883, she is buried with the  BOLIN name.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
it is known she had family in Missouri.she had a brother named  John Marion, born  in RAY county, Missouri. also another brother  RICHARD CANNON MAYES b.RAY Co.MO. returned and died there.   also it is thought her family ran a rock quarry in Claiborne county,Tn.new info here is this has not been found that the rock quarry was in the Mayes family.

STERLING's parents are  THOMAS & ELIZABETH BRIDGES MAYES.

Sterling Mayes was born in the Barren Creek section of Claiborne
County, Tennessee, on February 22, 1819. He was married about
1837 to Sally Carr in Claiborne County and they lived at the old
home site until 1840. They moved then to Ray County, Missouri,
where they resided for six years. At that time a disease, "the Plague",
swept through that area taking the lives of large numbers of the
pioneers.  For that reason they returned to Claiborne County and
farmed there for the rest of their lives.

Sterling and SARAH?. Sally Carr Mayes had eight children, six boys md two girls: The oldest was
(1) James Dickerson Mayes, born October 31, 1838, in Claiborne
County.
(2) William Houston (Huse) was born about 1840 in
Claiborne County. It is not known whether or not he was married,
but he was a Union soldier and was captured near Bull's Gap,
Tennessee, by the Confederates and confined in the Andersonville
Prison. He was so weak from starvation when released near the end of the war that he died without reaching home, about 1865.

(3) John Marion, born February 23, 1842, in Ray County, Missouri.
He married Lucretia Jones (born 1841) first and later Manila
Lewis, the date of these marriages being unknown, and died January 2, 1914.

(4) Nancy Ann, born May 13, 1845, Ray County, Missouri.  She
died about 1883 and was buried in the Mayes Family cemetery on
Barren Creek.

(5) Richard Cannon, born May 21, 1849, Ray County Missouri and
married Talitha Parker in June 1867. He died on a farm near
Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and is buiied near by at Salem County.

(6)Elizabeth Jane born about 1852 in Claiborne County. She was
married twice, first to Benjamin Parker and then to Charles Ross.
The date of her death is unknown but she is buried in the old Mayes cemetery on Barren Creek.

(7) Louis Johnson born August 26, 1854, in Claiborne County. He
married twice, first March 11, 1874, to Louisa Alice Shipley and
secondly on November 11, 1913, to Minnie Shipley, both
marriages taking place in Claiborne County. He died July 19, 1937,
and was buried in Shipley's cemetery about four miles from
Tazewell on Federal Highway 25 in an unmarked grave by the side
of his first wife who has a Marker.

(8) Thomas J. was born about
1857 in Claiborne County, Tennespee. Nothing more is known
about him.

recently Steve in Knoxville, says a story has it that our Nancy breast fed an indian baby on their way from TX to TN,as the indian lady had no milk,. we are more to believe this than my gramps.their dad did leave them and return, but no one but Lizzi would talk to him.he left never heard from again
Here is a story  told by my grandfather, that his father John Jack Moore   abandoned his family,i assume around 1879-82. dates fit some of what this story says.)

my grandfather said native american indians help raise them some or at least helped them with food,my great grandmother would be gone to a miller to get flour & meal ground, and an indian family watched the kids while she was gone for several days.it was said she died giving birth to twins,by her 2nd husband,no name known.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems that that John "Jack" Moore,(my great grandfather) was from
Texas,?  & may not have been from Germany, as has been stated in the family for years.

9/1/03  Recent info may have our
MOOREs roots in  KNOX Co.TN.

our      MOOREs have been a very secretive, or very quiet about  the past generation.

On Houston's death papers it has he was born in Texas.  I found him and
his family in the 1900 census for Knox county.  There it says he was born in Texas and his father was born in Texas.   They were NOT in Knox County in 1880.  I found Houston, Will, and Jeff in the 1880 census for Claiborne County . Houston did get married in Knox County in 1887. The only one I found that was born in Knox County was John Marion Moore.  That information came from a book at the McClung room at the library that was titlted Deaths in Claiborne County.

The above info by Steve Moore of Knoxville,Tn.

new info on their sons in the 1880 claiborne county census:
Jeff was working for a Mays family ( maybe his
mother's family) . Houston
was working for a Goin family.  And William
was working for a Moyer family.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Will:  PHOTO   was a gambler on riverboats,on the mississippi river. we had an old photo of him taken in HERRIN,ILLNOIS,he may have settled in the ST.LOUIS area. there was a tv show about 20 years ago about the west, on PBS, I think.  there was a photo popped up, saying the name of the man standing, but didn't know the one sitting, well that was my great uncle Will. my aunt has the original, we wish we knew who had that copy. we don't know will's birth date. was he older than Houston?. an uncle was said to have seen Will between 1912-1917,far as known that was the last ever heard of him.
