1. Rev. Rice W. WHITEACRE, M. Born on 20 Jan 1788 in Grainger Co., TN/NC.  Rice W. died in Claiborne Co., TN on 5 Dec 1846; he was 58. Buried in Cave Springs Cemetery, Claiborne Co., TN. Occupation: Preacher Of Ana-Baptist Faith. Education: Owned & Lived On Cave Spring Farm. Religion: Bapt. Minister Of Cave Springs Bapt. Church Located 4 Miles N. Of Tazewell, TN.

Some info from Old Time Tazewell:  From pages 251-252:
A Sketch of Rev. Rice Whitaker and Family by Mary A. Hansard
Reverend Rice Whitaker owned and lived on a farm known as the Cave Spring farm.  He was among the first settlers of this county.  He looked very old in my first recollection.  He was a preacher of the Anti-Baptist denomination.  I do not remember his wife's maiden name.  We always called her Aunt Nancy.  I cannot call to mind the names of any of his family except Joseph Whitaker, who owned and lived on the old homestead of his father.  He was among our best citizens and much respected.  He raised a family also.  Andy Whitaker, who owns a fine residence bordering on New Tazewell and other fine property also, is a son of Joseph Whitaker.  He married a Miss Roark, daughter of Timothy Roark.  Mrs. Brooks, late widow of Calvin Brooks, and Mrs. James Sutton were daughters of his.  I cannot give a minute description of the Whitaker family, but suffice it to say that all the Whitakers of this county, so far as I know, are descendants of the said Reverend Rice Whitaker, who passed away perhaps sixty years ago.

Some info from P. G. Fulkerson papers:
Whitaker, Rice    Oct. 22, 1980
Rev. Rice Whitaker, a Baptist minister, came to the Cave Springs section from N. C. at an early data.  His children were:  Andrew, who married Fannie Williams; Timothy, married Peggy Southern; Matthew, married Nellie Estes; Betsy, married Travis Brooks; Clinton; William; Joseph.
Matthew Whiteaker and his son were both killed by a squad of Confederate commanded by Littrell of Lee Co. during the Civil War.
Timothy Whiteaker of New Tazewell is the son of Andrew.

Some info from Gary at Garberbnuts@aol.com
Andrew Whitaker was md. to Fanny Williams.  There is no evidence that she was
ever a Roark .  This misconception came from the Hansard book of
recollections on the people of Tazewell Tenn, that she could remember.  She
states that all her memories may not be correct.  She stated that Andrew
Whitaker md. a Miss Roark and from this many people concluded that Fanny was
a maiden Roark.  I researched the Roark name in Claiborne Co. and could not
come up with any older families with a daughter named Fanny Roark, however on
her death certificate, Timothy Whitaker names his mother's maiden name as
Fanny Williams.
There is an old Timothy and Sarah Roark family in Claiborne Co. but they do
not have a daughter named Fanny , so I had to go with the information that
Fanny was a Williams and Mrs. Hansard must have gotten mixed up when
recalling the information.

They had the following children:
 11 i. Sarah, F (1835-1916)
 12 ii. Timothy R., M (1839-1923)

Some info from Gary at Garbernuts@aol.com
Travis Brooks b. abt 1821 is believed to be the son of Nancy Brooks Nevilles
Brooks Rowlett.  She b. 1788 the dau. of Bartholomew Brooks and Susannah
Smith Brooks of Prince Edward Co. VA.  Nancy md. first James Nevilles,
secondly, an unknown Brooks, as evidenced in the will of her third husband
Mack Rowlett, who transferred land in the will to Laura, Anna, and Zachariah
Brooks, his wife Nancy's children by and I quote :" a former husband."

Travis and Andrew and maybe other Brooks' of the time may have been sons of
Nancy's Brooks husband by a former wife of his.  Often times in a second
marriage of this kind a husband and the wife both came into the marriage with
children from their prior spouse.

Nancy married her Brooks husband after 1820 in VA, as she is listed on the
1820 VA census as Nancy Nevilles head of household.  There are no mg records
for the 1820 to 1830 era in Prince Edward Co. or neighboring Charlotte Co.
VA.  So we next find Nancy listed as Nancy Brooks head of household in 1830
Claiborne Co TN census.  Her Brooks husband died or divorced.  Records very
scant for this decade.

Next Nancy Brooks md. Mackness Rowlett in 1838 and is listed in his 1848
will.
The connection with Travis is that he and Zachariah Brooks both married a
Whitaker, Travis marrying Elizabeth Whitaker, and Zachariah marrying Sarah
Whitaker niece of Elizabeth Whitaker.  Travis and Zachariah split the land
that Zachariah inherited from his stepfather Mack Rowlett.  Travis and
Zachariah both were in the 8th Tenn Cavalry Co. F.  fighting with the Union.

One theory is that Mack Rowlett only named the youngest Brooks children of
Nancy in his will because they were her natural children, if the other Brooks
siblings came from her former husband's first wife, then he might be less
likely to name them in his will.

Hope this isn't too confusing but it took years of research and travel to
come to these conclusions.
