BOUCHER/BUTCHER FAMILY

The earliest Boucher ancestor that we have been able to prove is Elisha Boucher. We believe that he is the son of Robert Boucher and Nancy ___ but have not been able to prove this yet.  The Census records of Lee Co. VA strongly indicate that this is likely.

We have seen several documents where the name Elisha Boucher and Elisha Butcher are both used in the same document, referring to the same individual.

The earliest document that we found Elijah Butcher was the 1850 Census of Lee Co. VA (House 964-Family 993). He is listed with three daughters Nancy, Eliza and Minerva. I descend from his daughter Eliza. The next house and family listed is Nancy Butcher who we believe is the mother of Elijah.

In 1851, Eliza gave birth to a daughter.  She was born either in Lee Co. VA or in Claiborne Co. TN. Eliza’s daughter was named Louisa (various spellings) Butcher. The birth father is unknown. There is no marriage record in Lee Co. VA or Claiborne Co. TN for Eliza Butcher prior to the birth of Eliza.

On 7 June 1853, Eliza Butcher married Samuel Kibert. (Claiborne Co. TN Marriage Book 3, Page 21.)

On 8 May 1854, Elijah Butcher deeded land to Eliza Kibert. (Claiborne Co. TN, Deed Book W, Page 333.) Elisha Boucher Deed to Eliza Kibert. We believe that this is Elisha Boucher, son of William Boucher.  He would be Eliza’s First Cousin. We have not researched how Elijah obtained the land he deeded to Eliza but suspect that is belonged to his wife’s family.

On 4 April 1857, Elisah Boucher/Butcher recorded the following:  (Claiborne Co. Deed Book Y, Page 95.)  Elisha Butcher Deed to Eliza Kibert.
"…do hereby give to my daughter Eliza Kibert the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, the proceeds of the sale of two Negroes sold by me … her husband who is to have nothing to do with it or its profits, he and his said wife being separate from each other…"
Note: Any divorce record was lost in a Court House fire in the early 1930’s.

On 4 April 1859, a Marriage Contract was recorded in the Claiborne Co. TN, Deed Book Y, Page 710. Marriage Contract Between R. (Robert) Peck and Eliza Butcher.
They basically agree that anything Eliza owns prior to the marriage remains hers and her heirs and anything Robert owns prior to the marriage remains his and his heirs.  Anything that is accumulated during the marriage is to be split between them and their heirs.

On  6 April 1859, Robert Peck and Eliza Butcher/Beucher are married. (Claiborne Co. TN Marriage Book 3, page 103.)

In the 1860 Census of Claiborne Co. TN, Cl-77-286, the following entry was noted:
Peck, Robert 25 TN; Eliza 35 KY; Luesa 9 TN; Elizabeth Kibert 5 TN.
This is the household of Robert Peck the new husband of Eliza. In the household is her daughter Luesa, who was born before Eliza married Robert Peck. It appears that her name would be Peck from the Census but this is an error. Also in the household is (Mary) Elizabeth Kibert, the daughter of Eliza’s marriage to Samuel Kibert.

On 3 May 1867, Loueza Butcher married James Bussell. (Claiborne Co. TN Marriage Book 3, page 156.) Note that Louisa has taken her mother’s maiden name of Butcher for her last name.

On 15 July 1869, Mary Elizabeth Kibert married Thomas Ellison. (Claiborne Co. Marriage Book N, Page 30.)

On 25 January 1878, James Bussell & wife (Luise) sold a tract of land.  (Claiborne Co. Deed Book I-2, Page 115.) Deed James Bussell & Wife to David & George Cosby.
In the property description the following was noted:
"…running to a stake at a corner at the William Caxeron (?) fence where the divide was made between the two heirs of Eliza Peck…"

I descend from Louisa Butcher and James Bussell. Their oldest son, John F. Bussell was born in 1869 in Claiborne Co. TN. ( 1870 Census of Claiborne County - Cl-5th District-61.)  Bussell, John 19 TN, Louisa 18 TN, John 1 TN.

On 4 September 1892, John F. Bussell married Dora E. Clarkson. ( Claiborne Co. TN Marriage Book 6, Page 30.)  They had a daughter named Rachel Bussell, who married Sherman Smith in Claiborne Co. TN. They had two daughters before Rachel died. My mother Ethel Ola Smith was their oldest daughter. Ethel Ola married my father Frank Sewell Bray. I am the oldest of their 10 children.

Hope this will help someone who is trying to track this family.  Any help proving the parents of Elisha and the wife of Elisha  would be greatly appreciated.

     PECK, NORA BURCH - June 13, 1946
     Mrs. Nora Burch Peck of Tazewell was born Sept. 10, 1873 and passed away May 29, 1946 at her home.  She was 72 years, 8 months and 19 days old.  She was united in marriage to W. N. Peck on September 1, 1891.  She was the daughter of the late Rev. W. H. Burch.
     She is survived by her husband, W. N. Peck of Tazewell; one daughter Mrs. Clarence Longworth of St. Charles, Va.; four sons William General, Glenn Robbins of Ohio, Monroe of Powhatten, Ohio, Rev. Johnny Peck of Middlesboro, Ky. and Paskel of Tazewell.  She also leaves 31 grandchildren, one sister Mrs. John Loy of Arthmus, Ky. and one brother J. S. Burch of Trosper, Ky.
     At the age of 14 she joined the Cave Springs Baptist Church and later moved her membership to Liberty Baptist Church, in Loy, Ky. where she remained a member until death.
     The hands of death lurks in the shadows of all of us, however quiet or peaceful may be our activities.  We never know when it will suddenly reach out and claim its victim.
     A full rounded life was that of Mrs. Peck.  For Mr. Peck, his daughter and his sons, these memories will become increasingly precious and out of the shadows will come comfort and joins them in their grief.
     Rev. Oscar conducted services at Crane Cemetery.  Coffey Funeral Home was in charge.

     CARMONY, CALEP JOSHUA - Oct. 2, 1940
     Calep Joshua Carmony was born October 4, 1874 and died September 25, 1940 being 65 years,
9 months and 25 days old.  He was married to Osina Williams, March 18, 1900.  To this union was born 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls, Maynard, Lloyd, Arthur, Preston Carmony of Tazewell and Bertha Lee DeBusk, Nellie Pace of Tazewell, one daughter, Martha preceded him in death,
January 7, 1927.
     He professed faith in Christ at an early age and joined the Baptist Church at Big Spring Union.  He is now a member and deacon at the River View Baptist Church.  He lived a faithful member until his death.
     He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, 4 sons and 2 daughters, and eight grandchildren, two sisters, Martha Wolfe of Harrogate and Sarah Elizabeth Cartwright of Middlesboro, one brother Mike Carmony of Tazewell and one half brother, Clint Liford of Appalachia, Va. and lots of other relatives and a host of friends.
     Brother Carmony has always had a great interest in Church and Sunday School work.  He was teacher of the Bible class for 30 years and it was a great pleasure to him to serve the Lord.
     It was his desire on his death bed to go to Sunday School again.  He bore his sickness with great patience.  We are of an assurance he is resting on the right hand of God.  While our home is made sad Heaven is made brighter.
     Pallbearers were Robert Estes, Grover Gilbert, Dewey England, Cecil DeBusk, Curtis Massengill, Neil Minton and Steve Whitaker.
     The flower girls were Roxie Gilbert, Minnie Gilbert, Irene Evans, Edna Davis, Norma Lee Carmony, Ruby Massengill, Bonnie Massengill, Ethel Pace, Anna Mae Wolfe, Lucille Wolfe and Bobbie Wolfe.

     Mrs. Martha Jane Wolfe, daughter of the late James and Mary Carmony, was born
July 12, 1872 and passed away at the home in Harrogate on April 19, 1951.  She professed faith in Christ at an early age and was a member of the River View Baptist Church at the time of her death.  She is survived by her husband Cecil Wolfe of Harrogate; brother Mike Carmony of Tazewell; ten step children James Bolton, Mrs. Lizzie Smith, Miss Mossie Wolfe, Tom Bolton, Mrs. Mary Fryer, Mrs. Dona Sulfridge, Mrs. Cordie Buchanan, William and Mont Bolton and Rev. Bob Wolfe.  Her first husband Marsh Bolton, preceded her in death.  Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m. Friday at the River View Baptist Church with Rev. Wint Bolton and Rev. I. S. King officiating.  Interment in the church cemetery.
